Been doing some thinking in relation to the tragic news that shocked our nation concerning the young lady who committed suicide after being denied bursary, well like many others we were taught from child hood that graduating from university is the only key to a fulfilling and successful life and I cannot even begin to imagine what trauma one would go through after being denied such an opportunity. I feel our families (it being the foundation to society) should place emphasis on discovering ones individual abilities which may offer other many effective alternatives to a successful life as much as they do on education. Who knows the other alternatives may be what may help one sustain a level of education. To the person who may be going through a similar heart shuttering experience, do not be too quick to make decisions when grieved, angered or depressed. I know you believe nothing will help, you don’t want to tell anyone your problems, you do not know where to go to and you think asking for help is a sign of weakness. This is where the important role of friends comes in. Genuine concern from a friend has the potential to free one from the mental trap of suicidal thoughts. If what people will say is not enough then on a social level let what’s around speak to you, try to consider the grade twelve full certificate holder who due to lack of funding is now a conductor taking care of a family of five that lost both parents, consider the lady who is praying tirelessly that she may be granted bursary after applying for the third time, consider the other lady who runs her tailoring business at home but had enough points to get her into the School of Natural Sciences but couldn’t also because of lack of bursary also consider the professional video editor who started off as a shop keeper with no money for school and all he had was interest and a willing heart, the list is endless. All these people have something in common they have spirits of winners they never quit they just changed the method of play but all with an objective which is to achieve. Anyone desperate enough for suicide . . . should be desperate enough to go to creative extremes to solve problems. In the end we don’t live for ourselves but for other people’s good and every decision we make should build some one up in one way or another but like I said in the beginning. . . . am just thinking.
