Been having an interesting discussion with Michael Angelides, CEO of the Tanzanian Professional Hunting Association on the Tanzanians for Wildlife Facebook site. To do with baiting lions so they can be shot by trophy hunters. It is apparently a widespread practice. Yet the Tanzania Wildlife Act (2009) says this: “65.-(1) Any person shall not, except by and in accordance with the written authority of the Director previously sought and obtained or in accordance with regulations made under this Act - (a) use for the purpose of hunting any animal-Wildlife Conservation (i) any mechanically propelled vehicle; (ii) any poison, BAIT [my capitals], poisoned bait, poisoned weapon, stakes, net, gin, trap, set gun, pitfall, missile, explosives, ball ammunition, snare, HIDE [my capitals], spear, fence or enclosure ….” Let’s spread this around. Tanzania might just join Botswana in placing a moratorium on trophy hunting if we can apply some pressure.
