Been in Napa since Sunday through mid-week covering the quake. long hours and many sad moments as we traveled through town, looking at the devastation. Loma Prieta was worse of course. a bigger magnitude quake in a major town...cypress fwy collapse, marina fires, etc. but Napa is a small town and so many people were affected in what would be considered minor damages ... a chimney leveled, homes sliding a couple of inches from foundations, wall plaster falling, cracks in the ceiling ... all of that considered minor in the total scope of things .. but what always moves me ... is that every time i cover an earthquake or any natural disaster ie flood, wildfires ... no matter how small or large the destruction, its the people, the homeowners, the renters, that really dont measure destruction like the media does or for that fact, government agencies. destruction .. small or large ... is the same if youre the victim. its the family photos, the family home where generations were born and raised ...means nothing to anyone but to the people who lost those precious things. the other thing that really awed me ... was that so many of the disasters ive covered, the victims...the ones who have lost their homes ...almost always seem so positive .. so optimistic about the future. they talk about rebuilding, that no one was hurt, that its only materialistic. ... like there is a mantra that is so positive ... the glass is half full. hard to imagine for people like me whove never suffered loss like they have. makes you wonder ... how would i react being an earthquake victim?
