Been in the South West today and spoke to a fantastic group of young parents who were all volunteers at the Children’s Centre, and we were talking about the “Jobs” that were available locally to them. As in their case, this article confirms their experiences of agency and zero hour contract job opportunities, means they are not alone. theguardian/commentisfree/2015/jan/19/jobs-agency-workers-britain-economy-insecure-low-paid-work Key to Centre Managers is to include such detail in the context of their SEF’s for example……………. “Zero based agency jobs for example - retail; care homes; food production is becoming a problem for the families within the reach area.” Or even more detailed………… “Local industry/employment is based on Local industry/employment is based on warehousing, logistics, retail service and tertiary sector, in semi and unskilled work, with many of these being located to the East of Milton Keynes which is two bus rides away for many of those in the Reach Area. Whereas twenty years ago many of these roles would have been Local Authority based, now many of these services have been commissioned out, and the new providers only employ new recruits through agency or on a zero contract basis, often paying minimum wage, little holiday pay, and huge job insecurity.”
