Been re-watching Gravity and studying the soundtrack by Steven Price. For most of the album the compositions reflect the grand, intimidating and unforgiving expanse of outer space. Lots of cold synths, haunting horns and slower tempos. The album picks up in this, the second of the last track, when S. Bullocks character makes a final escape plunge into the atmosphere as the space station Shenzou breaks up around her. Its a thrilling climax built on a fast tempo and steady percussive synthesizers. A full orchestra and then choral voices bring the moment to a peak as her re-entry pod races through the atmosphere alongside burning debris, notably at about the 3:25 mark when the tone shifts from stressful and challenging to triumphant. The scene evokes images of both the Colombias iconic break up and at the same time the moment of conception, as bits and pieces of space station ride parallel towards the Earth below, like sperm cells racing towards an unfertilized egg. Great cinematic stuff. Give it a study. (Trivia: for those who have seen the film, Bullock actually splashes down into Lake Powell, just east of Las Vegas, on the Colorado River).
