Been thinking a lot lately about the philosophy of climbing after seeing a ueli steck video talking about the process. Enjoying the process is key to being able to climb at the higher levels. You have to be prepared to fall off climbs at these grades week after week and yet still come back to them with the attitude that this might be the time I get to the top or get it clean. You have to be able to give up on a climb in a session and accept that this week isnt the week and if you come back later youll be stronger and fresher and make some progress. Also you have to be able to allow a climb to get to you a bit, let it into your head think through the sequences during the time youre not climbing. Tonight after doing exactly that with a climb from last week that is been attempting a month or so before and not progressing beyond the second clip I topped out what is labelled a 27. This being the grade Ive been targeting lately. However one of the climbers in the gym, one that has climbed around the world informed me it was a 28 which felt great because all of the moves were independently quite doable. However even though I consider this an achievement I already have greater goals, goals such as climbing that climb clean, and progressing to even higher grades. Its a sport that has that quality that there is always the potential for harder challenges. And thats where it becomes so important to enjoy the journey. Im also incredibly grateful to the extremely patient belayers who make this progress possible. Without their willingness to wait stuck at the bottom of a climb endlessly catching me and wanting for me to succeed I wouldnt get so far. Lauren Simpson you are awesome!
