Been wide awake since 7:30 thanks to the F1 Grand Prix practice laps...watching the Blu-ray of MACHETE KILLS to vent a bit of frustration. Pretty silly film though. Robert Rodriguezs original MACHETE (2010) was an enjoyable piece of dumb violent fun, but the sequel just takes things way too far into AUSTIN POWERS levels of satire, and outrageous CGI violence just doesnt do it for me Im afraid (especially when its at a video game level in terms of quality). Demián Bichir is pretty good though, as a Mexican crime lord with a split personality (I would rather have seen a movie just with him as the main character), and Danny Trejo has such amazing charisma and character in his face. And Rodriguez certainly knows how to cram a film with beautiful tough women and cameos from an odd assortment of names (here we wave Mel Gibson, Sofia Vergara, Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga, Jessica Alba, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Tom Savine, Michelle Rodriguez and Antonio Banderas). Theres still a bit of fun to be had from MACHETE KILLS - when you sit down to watch a movie with that title you should know exactly what you are going to be getting - but I feel like the idea has definitely run its course (theres a fake trailer before the film for a supposed further sequel, MACHETE KILLS AGAIN...IN SPACE).
