Bees (native and the introduced honey bee) are chief among the animal pollinators, which are responsible for pollinating over 80 crops of agricultural importance and as a result, they are essential in maintaining our global food supply. It has been said that without bees we will lose our food supply...Bee populations face a variety of stressors in Australia and worldwide, chief among these is climate change. Beekeepers (the term we use for people that keep honey bees) have had to truck their bees across long distances to find areas with adequate rain and bloom in order to keep their bees alive. Those without that ability have had colonies starve. Native bees, without the ability to cover the hundreds of kilometres required to find a new food source of food, face a similar fate.... So what can you and I do? Keep bees! You could keep honey bees, but if the sting risk is not something you can live with, you can either keep Tetragonula carbonaria or Austroplebia australis (in the Eastern states). These native stingless bees can live happily in a shoebox-sized hive in your garden. They are super easy to care for in that you don’t have to do anything but place them in a suitable location. As a bonus they are fascinating to watch, and sometimes engage in epic battles for hive domination! riaus.org.au/articles/need-bees/? What Will We Leave Our Children?
