Beethoven Appreciation Month Day 27 (cont.): One of my Favorite Things! For quartet no. 11, Beethoven invented a new term, serioso, to describe the tempo of its 3rd movement: to be played with SERIOUS speed. There is a take-no-prisoners approach throughout this revolutionary work that continued to inspire composers over 200 years later in the 20th Century like Arnold Schoenberg. Mahler loved it so much, he re-scored it for string orchestra. As always with Beethoven, the ferocious is balanced with the gentle and sublime, but this really is no work for fools or half-steppers. You have been warned. This is one of my favorite things. We love it so much, we will be posting more than one performance. First up, a brilliant Canadian quartet. youtu.be/dYpZM7mZYHg #BEETHOVEN #SERIOSO #foryourDomepiece
