Before Christmas, we posted several videos from the December 8 trustee meeting related to the Common Core transition at SCESD. If you missed them, you can access them on youtube: youtu.be/8VAzCKZCNGY. We asked Dr. Luza why no instructional materials were provided to our children before administering an ELA benchmark (ELA stands for English Language Arts). Trustee Garcia interrupted before his good friend could answer, suggesting instead that we take it up with our school principal. So we did...the very next day in fact. Our principal confirmed the District has no plans to adopt an ELA curriculum until next year. A week later, on December 16, we received an email from Assistant Superintendent Lori Sanders, who basically said no instructional materials were necessary for the benchmark because no information needed to be pre-taught. She said students only needed to read the Snow White passages and answer questions based on what they read, and she attached two pages from the test, which you can view here: https://drive.google/file/d/0Bzwp3DfrQXD5c3lpT0RYR1YzQW8/view?usp=sharing. We clarified for Ms. Sanders that our concern was not so much that the information was not available during the test, but rather that our children had no opportunity to practice the benchmark ahead of time before being tested on it. Consequently we are aware the entire class bombed the test. Sanders did not immediately reply. We sent her a follow up email on December 19 requesting a response. But by that time, she had already left for winter break. You can view the entire email string here: https://drive.google/file/d/0Bzwp3DfrQXD5Q2toMlZTbjZ4cDQ/view?usp=sharing. According to the automatic reply we received from Sanders email address, she is scheduled to return on December 29. We will let you know if she provides any additional information next week.
