Before Egypt, their family was a mess, the Hebrews. Coming out of Egypt they were a bunch of pagans with a legend of God. If you keep this in mind it helps put the Old Testament in context. The law God gave Moses still stands as truth. The law Moses, in turn, gave the Hebrews was imperfect but kept them together and fostered the idea of one god who is God. Then, in the fullness of time, Jesus came, for many reasons, one of which was to set the record straight as to the character of God. So when you wonder just what God is like, think Jesus, who never said he came to pay for our sins but to save us from our willingness to do them, preaching repentance and promising divine help to all who would so believe in him that they set out to obey him and oppose their own evil self.
