Before I begin, I have three very important people to thank, for if not for their help I would not be alive to write this today. My wife Elizabeth for her ability to see a problem and acting upon it. My neighbors Heather Seeking for helping my wife get me off my ass so to speak. Finally Dr. Huggett who performed emergency surgery. From what I have been told and written in my post operative report my appendix burst somewhere around May 25, 2013, but because I suffer from chronic back pain from two previous surgery’s I had mistaken the pain from my appendix bursting as my normal back pain. Big MISTAKE. I stopped eating all together and went from 170 lbs to 124 lbs in just 6 days. I had begun to hallucinate, thinking I was back in Vietnam and my wife was the enemy. My wife along with my neighbor called 911 on May 31, 2013 and transported to St. Anthony’s Hospital. They discovered that not only did my appendix burst but my kidney’s had shut down, my bowls had ruptured and I had become septic. My surgeon told my wife that they were not sure if I was going to make it through the operation and if so they did not think I would be the same man I used to be mentally because I had gone down to two respirations a minute and had gone through 9 whole units of blood. The outlook was not well. To top it off I was going through Post Operative Hallucinations, and would not let my wife near me and started ripping out all my intravenous tubes to the point that they hand to tie my hands down. Things started to get better and I was moved to a Rehabilitation Center on June 7, 2013 but still unable to walk, dress myself or anything else we all take for granted. Things started to progress really fast with rehab and strength training. Every day I progressed faster and more than the day before. On June 18, 2013 I was released to come home. It’s great to be home and with the ones I love and of course alive.
