Before I file these photos, let me share one of my favorite places. No secret I love being in the middle of nowhere; well, this is it. In southern Utah there is a valley of towers constructed around 1300 CE (a guess). Unlike any other ancient structures in the west these are unique in design and construction. Also: a total mystery. Towers! Dozens, upon dozens – both on the edges and at the bottom of the arroyos. Not used for lookout, defense, storage, or to live in (without ventilation humans would die in the intense summer heat). Purpose unknown. From the rubble, archaeologists think many were three or four stories. One of the reasons I like this place (other than its magic) is its inaccessibility. Many miles of deep rutted dirt roads and then barely discernible hiking trails. There is a ranger station but the attitude is: if you made the effort to get here – feel free to explore at will. No restrictions other than don’t damage anything (obviously). Some towers were improbably built on boulders. Some were built leaning off the edge. No other buildings have been found other than towers. Pics are from various times of year so the vegetation will look different. Winter is the better time because the structures stick out and are easier to find. I am not sure which images I am going to post right now, but there will be a structure in every picture.
