Before I go to bed (its past 1 am), Im writing to greet our precious son, Ian, a happy 10th birthday! By this time 10 years ago, I was in the labor and delivery room at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac, Michigan. My water broke at just past midnight and Robert and I calmly went to the hospital. I didnt experience normal contractions, but was experiencing extreme pain on both sides of my ribcage. And when I told the nurse about it, she said I was actually having contractions as shown on the monitor. Dang, that means Ive been having contractions for 2 weeks already! (I asked my OB-GYN about it and he said he doesnt know what it was). A little later, I was told that Id need to undergo caesarean section. Only after the operation was I told by Robert that it was an emergency surgery bec Ians heart rate was slowing down due to nuchal cord. Ian was born at 3:36 am, weighing 8 lbs 1 oz (yes, even without nuchal cord, Id have to undergo C/S bec of his size relative to my pelvic size), 21 inches in length. And yes, I cried the moment I saw his face. Tears of joy, of course. Until now, he never fails to make me smile just at the mere thought of him. Im still as overwhelmed with this feeling of gratitude and love that I never thought I could ever experience. Never doubt -- Id die for him, this good soul thats the best gift to us ever. Happy birthday, Ian! We love you the most in the world.
