Before I lay it down: “Something strong inside…..” Queen - TopicsExpress

Before I lay it down: “Something strong inside…..” Queen Maya Angelou died today. It’s been all over Channel Facebook News. It’s been a delight watching and hearing her over the years. I’m sure that her best-selling novel “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” will probably sell another million more copies before the week is over. It’s an excellent read that describes how a young Maya deals with insecurity, self-hatred, and a uncanny sense of survival after being abused by her mom’s boyfriend. Still, she rose. It seems like the people who go through the most heartache and pain end up having the best stories to tell. They know how to reach our inner-most souls when describing all of the ish they had to overcome just to exist. It’s a sort of will power that is unmatched by normal beings who possibly could have withered in contrast. Pain’s gripping wrench will either break you or squeeze something out of you that you never knew you had. My dad metaphorized it as the equivalent of getting “blood out of a turnip”; something that is most impossible to do. Still, there has to be something that sustains people like this; there’s something strong inside. I wonder how many Maya Angelous are walking around in the hallways of my school every day. How many children have been broken down by abuse, torment, and neglect? I look for signs in those kids daily. I just want to make sure that I’m not obscure to a “Maya in the midst”. I look for it in you all, too. Being the resident Facebook aficionado, I try to analyze your posts, quotes, pictures and “likes” in efforts to determine if there is any Maya Angelou in you. Is there something that you’re trying to tell us? Are you trying to relay your pain? How are you able to survive? You have something strong inside… Whatever doesn’t kill us should make us stronger. That’s what they say. I should be Hercules by now. Yes, I too, am phenomenal. Still, I rise. All of God’s children need traveling shoes; that includes me. Therefore, Marguerite Johnson may have sometimes been gender specific, but her words are for us all. In closing, we lost a legend on today, but she left some seeds behind. Pick some up; plant them in your minds. Water them, if you have to, with your tears. You have something strong inside…….. God bless and goodnight.
