Before I relate why this letter, let me first offer my belated condolences to the family of the late Mr. Evan Yeo.. a gentleman of great integrity and has proven over time a friend indeed to those in need. Mr. Yeo is amongst four other Singaporeans I have held and been lucky to have enjoyed their wisdom and visions that have stood well for our republic. Our first Prime Minister Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, is among them whom I consider my best mentor. There are two sides to the coin they say and I can safely say is kind and understanding but at the same time can be very strict to the extent of condemning you outrightly as one labour MP found out much to his chagrin. Those who are 35 and above are today able to purchase a HDB flat. The credits and thanks must be accorded to Mr. Lee, for he was the one who initiated the policy changes back in 1988. Thank you Sir. The late Mr. S Rajaretnam gave me the backing and introduced me to journalism, guided me through the turbulent beginnings and provided the encouragement. If today I am alive and gainfully employed the credits go to our Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Mr. Tharman. His unselfish helping hand has made me what I am today. Many thanks to these gentlemen and hope there are many more of them. My prevailing medical condition has prompted me to write this letter and hope it will make into the print. My first encounter was when he addressed the PAP election rally in 1959 held at the open field besides the now defunct Nanyang shoe factory of Bukit Panjang. His strong speech directed at the British captured my imagination and nurtured the spirit of independence. Later on I met Mr. Lee at an Istana garden party in 1962 and the feelings towards this great man blossomed further.
