Before I start reading its playbill and be influenced by what it says about the play I have watched last night, let me set down here my independently-thought-of comments on the play PAHIMAKAS NG ISANG NEGOSYANTE which shall be mounted for the last time at 3:00 pm today at CCP Studio Theater, that stamp-size acting area which provides us with a closer look at Willy Loman and his family. As characters then are fluidly delineated, we are figuratively drawn closer to each of them. Since through that closeness is our (audiences) magnification of Willy and Lindy and Biff and Happy, and since most of the actors are really convincing, err, powerful (a most fitting description, I guess), the play constantly nudges me with some personal truth, mostly, about getting old - particularly, that since I am presently approaching Willys age, I should drop that constant make believe game or should realize that ideals are not to be confused with my present honest state. Willy, as a salesman, dreams for quite a long time until he realizes - too late - that he has grown tired and old and must succumb to the fact that really, he has not accomplished anything. Or have I been Millers Willy? Or are we who society refers to as senior citizens all Willy Lomans? Leo Abayas period set still haunts me - those gloomily lit glasspanes, the sadly sailing moon, those silhouettes of leafless tree branches at the cemetery. Gentle to the eyes too are the costumes - those varied hues of brown and red which contrast with neutrals and deepest of cool colors. Among the actors, Ms. Gina Pareno stands out as subtly, she chisels for us her loyal-to-hubby Linda Loman. Yul Servios insights on his Biff become characterization profound as he delineates and naturally becomes Biff. I worry for Nanding Josef, as during performance I am constantly reminded of a friend, Ama Quiambao, who, before her demise, has become a very powerful actor. Honestly though, when Pareno cries, I cannot stop my tears from falling.
