Before Rage there were not a lot of opportunities to see music video clips on TV of bands which were outside the parameters of Molly Meldrums mostly pathetic taste in pop music. On New Years Eve 78/79 I discovered XTC when I saw two clips on an all night marathon. Andrew Travers made me a tape of their first album and they became my favourite band of the post punk era. Here is what they sounded like when I saw 3 gigs in Sydney in 79. Pretty raw and very loud but much more disciplined than 99% of live Rock bands then (or now). Unfortunately Andy Partridge worked so hard that he developed some kind of anxiety disorder and by the early 80s they never toured any more. Fortunately they were still capable of recording beautiful LPs. Here is great footage from 79.
