Before being able to put into proper perspective the problems that plagues the Nigerian nation, one needs to sojourn back into history, making long stops at various years, e.g. 1914,60,63,66,67,70, e.t.c. Every year with its own gigantuan mishaps, and landmarks contributing in the current ailments bedeviling the Nation presently.uhm!! However irrespective of how mind provoking this story sounds, depending on who relates it, or where it is sourced( specially when you hear it from my father),3things strike you from the very beginning:- 1. Tribalism and ethnicity, birthed long before even Nigeria became a republic. 2.Religion, being the parent of all mishaps, cultivated by dubious elements. 3. Lack of comradeship and chivalry, or should I say honesty and goodwill. Both individually and collectively. That one is first a tribe before being a nigerian, is a normal occurrence, but it is in error for one to be a nationalist in our nation, as this only elicits cynicism, distrust, scorn and sometimes even ridicule. Comments like are you the only righteous man alive or do you think you are better than us, or love Nigeria more than me? Have become an all time response to love for land and country,uhm....used to browbeat the slightest hint of nationalism out of you, you are labelled a MUGU, and even sometimes physically harrassed. But just like an organization, or even an individual, cannot survive without a vision or should I say a collective goal so a nation. It will therefore not take one time to identify the rudderlessness of the Nigerian ship, what baffles me though, isnt the absence of a nigerian dream, but the complacency of we the people, from captain to deck-hand, and the entire crew, to a completely directionless voyage. In a hundred years or even fifty( which ever catches your fancy) all of us have failed to articulate a charter for this voyage. Not because we do not appreciate its relevance to both political and economic growth, but because we fear 1. The responsibility that comes with it. 2. An organized society. 3. A plain for equal opportunity. Reconciliation. 5. Accepting now that we are this old, that weve been foolish. However, the advent of a new generation has become. Opening our eyes to gross defects in the structuring of our society. That merchant called civilisation, peddling its wares. Displaying to our ignorance goods we can no longer overlook. Allowing us to recognize the stupidity of our ways, showing us the comfort that may come from creating a national ideology, which will sever us from the idiocy weve endured post independence a till now. The afore mentioned ills, although helped enrich the perpetrators especially ethnicity and religion extremism, has began loosing its hold, and yes the majority has began the upward but painful journey toward emancipation. Although this new found compass, which none of us seems to know how to use comes with a manual, it is evident that the Vipers who have hitherto enriched from the impoverishment of the majority will not relinquish their stronghold, ad we the people cant seem to follow the manual, why? Well I want to assume either the lettering arent legible, or it is written in a very foreign language. Or what is so difficult in A. Reconciliation B.trust. C. Learning from history D.honesty. 5. Patriotism E.respect for the rule of law. F. Human rights G. Nationalism To be continued.........
