Before reaching Mtwara in Tanzania to spend the night in May 2011, I had to cross the Rovuma River from Mozambique. We loaded my bicycle and trailer on a dory that locals use to cross the river which was propelled by a long pole, a la Venice. The dory under my command was unwieldy and it took us forever to reach the waist deep sandbank near the other side where I could walk off. The owner and his helper brought the boat around the long way. All the while they were keeping an eye on the hippos around us.
