Before reality TV there was the incredible HBO real life - TopicsExpress

Before reality TV there was the incredible HBO real life documentary series America Undercover. Sadly, the crowning achievement of the series, Jon Alperts unflinching 1989 One Year In A Life Of Crime (aka Life Of Crime Part 1) and its even more brilliant and disturbing sequel (which catches up with the main figures from the first documentary, Rob & Freddy, nearly 10 years later) Life Of Crime Part 2 from 1998, remain unreleased and unavailable for purchase (except as bootlegs) despite the overwhelming amount of notoriety AND praise which has been heaped upon both films by documentary film fans and critics alike. Ive never posted a link to a full-length film before, however, Life Of Crime Part 2 is such a staggering work of art and example of guerilla documentary filmmaking, as well as being simply engrossing and emotionally draining due to its content, that I felt compelled to post it. You may wonder why I posted Part 2. The answer is quite simple. First, Part 2 is a more compelling film. The lengths to which Alperts goes to objectively document the often very dangerous lives of Rob, Freddy, and Delirus are simply amazing. Second, within the first 5 minutes of Part 2 all of the highlights and need to know backstory aspects from the first film (1989s One Year In A Life Of Crime) are reviewed. I still highly recommend 1989s One Year In A Life Of Crime (aka Life Of Crime Part 1), however Life Of Crime Part 2 is more difficult to obtain and I believe more essential to lovers of documentary films. I warn you ahead of time, this documentary will haunt you. It will also make you laugh, wince, scream at the screen, and maybe even shed a tear or two. Hopefully one day Life Of Crime Parts 1 & 2 will be released (with tons of bonus features such as updates on the fates of Rob, Freddy, Delirus, Mike, etc.) on DVD by HBO or even better by Criterion Collection as they are worthy of such a high quality reissue treatment. Until then, well have to just hope youtube doesnt take them down or for those of us who have bootlegs, that we dont misplace them. So here it is in its entirety (theres a small glitch on the VHS tape that this was taken off of, however, only about 3-5 seconds of the film are missing), one of the most uncompromising looks into the lives of three humans on the path to nowhere ever captured: Life Of Crime Part 2. And remember, this is real...... https://youtube/watch?v=GU1oONLlDVg
