Before social networks, email, local newspapers and other types of product identification , an old time member of a local vfd told me the biggest problem they had with the community was people did not know the vfd existed until they needed them and because of the size of the community fire calls were far and few between the community forgot about vfd was around.... the longtime member said that every few weeks or so he would have the fire siren blown , volunteers would respond and the fire trucks would roll out to some pretty determined location and hangout for awhile and then return, by doing this folks would hear the siren and see the volunteers rolling to calls, this was a time when firefighters still rode the tailboard, keeping that image in the citizens mind.....
