Before starting Part 1.5 of this analysis PLEASE keep in mind this is my theory/theories with Silent Hill 2. Please have a pleasent and peaceful conversation if you are interested in this analysis. I will allow discussion and conversation, but please do not argue and pound it into someones head about what you believe about Silent Hill. Remember to have fun and keep an open mind regarding this Analysis of Silent Hill 2... Thank you. Part 1.5 - Marias Scenario Photo 1 As we start, we can tell that Maria is well aware she is born in the town of Silent Hill, but she is unaware how long shes been in Silent Hill If you examine the revolver she was contemplating with; you can tell there is only one bullet. As if to be playing Russian Roulette. Making the Player guess her plans. In Heavens Night, you are given a Chinese Cleaver upon exiting toward the Brookhaven exit. Mainly because if you try and leave towards Pete Bowl-O-Rama, you are met with a door that is stuck with gum. Which to me is a mystery seeing that considered to Maria, it was locked during Jamess Main Scenario. (This is not significant during the analysis, but odd enough to point out). If you also notice that if you head to Brookheaven, Maria doesnt have very much interest in the Hospital (obviously) at this point. Oddly enough to add to all this that when playing through Marias Scenario (even how I had many) that the monster do not attack. Strange how that sounds. I know monsters are effected by light and sound, but this I found baffling. Photo 2 Upon Entering the Baldwin Mansion, you thing something scary will jump out and grab you. The door instead immediately shuts on Maria, quickly denying her access. As Maria repeatedly knocks, asking if someone is there, begging to connect with another human being. The voice, Ernest Bladwin has now frorcably become Marias guide (though she doesnt know this yet). Perhaps to reflect in what will become of her or maybe even James if either of them commit suicide. In symbolism, Door are preferred as an entrance or exit to a new room or section in life. In Egypt doorways were often represented as the doorway to the soul. However, for Marias case (seeing she relates to James) it may be a doorway to the mind and how she escapes into Jamess Reality. Ernest disputably says to Maria It has nothing to do with me. No one here means theres no one to disturb me. Indicating that what Maria sees in the mansion and the monsters in the mansion are of Jamess creation. (In which if you know this, you dont need me to explain this). This also gives more support that Ernest is the voice of Silent Hill, playing (as I said before) a guide to Maria. As the conversation continues, the introduce themselves informally. Maria makes a joke, hoping to connect with Ernest, asking if he had any relation to Ernest Hemingway. Ernest doesnt comply with the joke. Saying sternly; its Baldwin. Quick research of Ernest Hemingway, for those that dont know who he is or know little; I am willing to summarize what he does and he is familiar to those who dont know about him. Ernest Hemingway was a well known author from the 20th century. Best known for the classic literature. With deeper research, but summarized- Ernest apparently had a common theme with suicide as well. Rather it be an ongoing theme or not; this is certainly an undertone of Marias Scenario. Hemingways Literature include: Indian Camp (1926) The Sun Also Rises (1926) A Farewell to Arms (1929) The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber (1935) For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940) The Old Man and the Sea (1951) A Moveable Feast (1964, posthumous) True at First Light (1999) Photo 3 You are free to explore the rest of the mansion. Returning to the Foyer, you hear a loud crash and pitter patter of feet accompanied by a laugh (do you explore -> Yes No) ((Just had to hahaha)) You are given access to a strange garden like area uptop the fireplace. Yet not before you pick up the necessary boards to solve the puzzle. White, Black and Red Boards. Diving into this, I am to place a simple principle that these boards are related not only to Amy Baldwin (who will be mentioned and met later) but also to the Rebirth Ending for Jamess Main Scenario. I was thinking about going into detail about regarding the symbolism of the boards, but the items they represent are better left for Jamess Scenario. (Sorry guys.) The boards you gather for the puzzle are: The White Board: White Chrism. The Black Board: Obsidian Goblet The Red Board: Crimson Ceremony Marias only puzzle represents as its read with the epitaph. Pointing more towards Jamess Rebirth Ending. This also represents Ernests desire to also bring back his daughter: Amy Baldwin. In order to retrieve the key that is inaccessible; the plates that were found must cover the blue/green grave like represents. This in turn will give you the Acacia Key. Leading to another part to the mansion and foreshadowing about Ernests daughter: Amy. Being lead up to the attic, we are brought to retrieve the Birthday Card Amy made for her father. All while we learn what happen to Amy, what caused trouble and why Ernest is the way he became. Leaving, you hear Amy requesting you give her present she made to her Daddy. Retracing steps, you are finally allowed to progress in the room that we first had met Ernest. From here we are also represented with a book called Acacia. We read that it represents eternal life and morality. From Egyptian Culture to the Arc of the Covenant, it also represents death and the release of/from grief. Photo 4 With our second meeting with Ernest and giving him his present from his daughter, we learn more about him (even if his barriers are not lead up). Getting deeper with the connection of Amy, Ernest reveals that Maria is known (strangely) by him. He confirms to her (not knowing if she believes or not) that she is born from a wish also known as a thought form or tulpa. Maria being created by James etc, ((Side Note)) My theory, which I planned on saving with the end of Jamess Scenario I wish to bring up here. That James may have already been through Silent Hill once already and (according if you ever played through Marias Scenario first) James is forced to experience a Groundhog Day like situation. Again, this a theory, but without enough evidence, this can be discussed at another time, If you like the idea of this theory, feel free to ask more detail and I will be happy to oblige! Returning to Maria, Ernest understands as to why Maria can see him (to me I would say hear, but its how they said it, so well just go along with the story). With the change of Ernests mind and a possibility of a miracle. Maria remarks she doesnt mind fighting for an impossible cause and walks off. Not without being thanked by Ernest first. If you also take note about the present left, Maria knows its best to leave it. Photo 5 In the study you have the option to read a book noted by Ernest called Lost Memories. The book speaks of resurrecting the dead, this also indicates that Ernest did more than anything to get his babygirl back. Even if that meant ritualistic tendencies. From here you are seeing more connection with Maria and James. You can also see he noted about the Liquid, Goblet and Book (White, Black, Red). Small notes upon getting the White Liquid is as follows: you can examine Amys tombstone, people writing graffiti to Keep Out of the Mansion. This includes finding another thing that James can stomach. You can also note that the path to Rosewater Park is inaccessible until you achieve your promise to Ernest. Photo 6 Returning to Ernest, Maria doesnt knock and its as if he knows or expected Marias swift return. As they talk, many realizations are made. Ernest detailing saying he knows that she too was born in this town, saying its fate. Not necessarily caring if she agrees with him or not. Though I question how the liquid returns back to the Blue Creek Apartments during Jamess Scenario... I guess that remains a mystery. Unless Ernest had something to do with it. There is no evidence to support this theory as of yet. I will keep this updated and in mind if I catch anything new. The last door is opened as Maria doesnt seem to care about the dead end. She is willing to accept herself and what she needs to do for James at this point. Perhaps this somehow gave Ernest some peace. Acceptance for the mistake he made, but in turn to assist those that need it. Though Maria knows that she is a thought form and Ernest served her more as a guide to direct her to James, there are issues. James is a bad man, as if to indicate she should perhaps stay away or keep her distance. Even regardless, Maria can see through that and accept the kindness that James has to offer. Ernest may be also convinced that Maria is Mary though Maria wishes to be her own person. Keep note that Maria never enters the last room, exiting the Baldwin Mansion and heading to Rosewater Park. Photo 7 Even as Maria walks through the fog, giving herself that final debate of life... you see her chuck the revolver over the stonewall (where Laura and James meet). James.... is all that she states, continuing to walk through the fog towards Rosewater Park. Fulfilling not only Jamess subconscious wishes, but to act as a guide. Seeing wisdom in what Ernest advised. Perhaps to encourage James to keep on his journey... ----- Part 2 will be up SOON!
