Before the Civil War the majority of the German community in NOLa - TopicsExpress

Before the Civil War the majority of the German community in NOLa were pro-Union. One of the prominent leaders was Michael Hahn who became the 19th LA State Governor and Congressional Representative to the 37th Congress in 1862. He was also one of the editors and publishers of the Deutsche Zeitung. Thats why you wont find any ads or classifieds for slaves in any of the German Newspapers: Deutsche Zeitung, Louisiana Staatszeitung or Echo. This philosophy probably also made the rest of the NOLa community wary of the Germans in their city, which lasted past Reconstruction. BTW, Hahn was originally from Bavaria.
