Before the Gulf War started, I was assigned to an attack - TopicsExpress

Before the Gulf War started, I was assigned to an attack helicopter squadron in Fort Hood, Texas. Our unit was identified to be part of the Shock and Awe which started the war. Unfortunately, the squadron was not mission ready, so their mission was scrubbed. They had no chance of getting back into the war. I went to my commanders office and asked him to find me a unit that had a viable mission in the war effort. While we were talking, he received a telephone call from another unit looking for a Medical NCO to take into Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. My commander told them I have just the man youre looking for standing right here in my office. Then he gave me the nod and I was approved to leave the Attack Helicopter Squadron and join the Evacuation Hospital. The new unit was being assembled by medical personnel of all ranks and specialties from around the country. Many senior NCOs were competing for key positions including the NCOIC of the Emergency Room position. When my name came up for consideration, and I interviewed with the Sergeant Major, I briefed her about my vast Emergency Medicine experience at BAMC and in Korea. That easily secured the NCOIC of the Emergency Room position for me. Several of the senior NCOs competing with me were assigned rudimentary positions such as latrine detail supervisor, security guard coordinator, motor pool dispatcher, construction inspector and billets safety supervisor, My experience level exceeded theirs and weighed heavier than their seniority. Hooah!
