Before the coming of football and projectiles hurtling round a track, the national sport was racing. One of the great events that took place at the end of the 18th century was the famous match between Hambletonian and Diamond, over the Beacon Course at Newmarket. So popular was the event that it is reputed it was impossible to find a bed within 20 miles of Newmarket. Stable boys and grooms had to camp out on the course. They raced at an amazing speed Across the Flat. Both jockeys, Buckle on Hambletonian and Fitzpatrick on Diamond, were liberal in their punishment. Hambletonian in particular suffered with cuts from Buckles spurs. Hambletonian won by the odd distance of half-a-neck.
