Before tractors and chemicals, most Iowa farmers grew small grains - TopicsExpress

Before tractors and chemicals, most Iowa farmers grew small grains like oats in a crop rotation to break up pest disease cycles and better manage weeds. Oat straw was used for livestock bedding, and the grain was used for feeding the horses who were a major power source on farms. Today, oats are the most commonly grown small grain in Iowa primarily for livestock feed. Saturday of the Practical Farmers of Iowa 2014 Annual Conference will offer attendees a Round I session on Practical Oat Production. Learn about modern production practices for this old crop from farmer Dan Wilson of Seven W Farm, Sam Raser and Bruce Roskens of Grain Millers. Take away how oats can once again be a viable, sustainable crop in rotations across Iowa.
