Before we began our 62-mile ride from Pueblo to La Junta we made - TopicsExpress

Before we began our 62-mile ride from Pueblo to La Junta we made to important stops: 1) to see the street in Fountain, CO that is named in honor of Captain Joshua T. Byers; and 2) to see the Fort Carson Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial at Gate 1 of the post. The beautiful September morning made conditions perfect for taking a few photos at each spot. We started our ride from the McDonalds parking lot on Hwy 50 in east Pueblo. The first 20 miles were great, on back roads with little traffic and nothing but peaceful cornfields and watermelon patches. When we joined Hwy 50 again we were met with speeding trucks and plenty of debris in the shoulder, but overall the conditions for our ride were pretty great. We did have a bit of wind in the face, but it wasn’t too bad, and the sun was warm but not blistering. Most importantly, the ride very flat in comparison to the ground I’ve covered during the past week, so that was a welcome change for the legs. I made it to mile 61.5 before I got my third flat tire of the trip (darn those goatheads!!!), so again I guess I should count my blessings. I don’t have any meetings scheduled with families until the end of this week, so our transit through southern Kansas will include long riding days and lots of prep for upcoming visits. I hope to post a new blog entry on my Gold Star Ride website tomorrow morning, so I’ll share the link for that once it’s actually available. Thank you for being a part of this journey with me…it’s tough to put into words the experience of crossing the country on a bike…let alone meeting so many incredible families along the way. It’s a priceless opportunity I will forever treasure.
