Before yesterdays failed rescue mission in Yemen, talk radio had been criticizing the Obama Administration for its slow decision to approve a hostage rescue attempt in November. Back then, upon receiving intelligence of the whereabouts of American hostage Luke Somers, the Pentagon created and approved a rescue mission within 6 hours. The mission proposal was then sent to the White House for final approval. But the Obama Administration reportedly dragged their feet for 48 hours as they assessed the political risk of proceeding. When they finally approved the attempt, it was too late. Al Qaeda had moved Somers. Fast forward to this week. After Al Qaeda gave the U.S. seventy-two hours to meet its demands or they would kill Somers, a mission was quickly put together to attempt another rescue. Unfortunately it failed, as militants killed Somers and another hostage when American commandos attacked. Now, Obama will face more second guessing and possible criticism. Though Im not a fan of his foreign policy, I applaud the President for his decision this week. He could have played politics again, and it might have worked out better politically. But he made the hard choice, and used the military as theyre supposed to be used for once. Lets hope he doesnt pay a price for trying to do the right thing, and in the process scare leaders away from making difficult decisions.
