Behind the Scenes in Conservation: Someone is getting ready for her debut ---- in a new frame, that is! We’ve posted a couple of times about the re-mounting, cleaning, filling, inpainting and varnishing of “Head of a Peasant Woman” (1882) by Vincent van Gogh. The artist used a much darker palette than those in his more familiar later paintings, but heavy discoloration of numerous varnish layers had further obscured the portrait. We’re happy to report that the conservation treatment is finished, and that we’ve just received a new frame, one that will better showcase the painting and its improved appearance. Below, the new frame is being prepped for installation. Look for “Head of a Peasant Woman” to be on the wall soon in Gallery 225.
