Being Chopper blokes, we used to like playing the odd prank, yes even on civilians. One of our little known jokes was to land at a farm house, and ask for directions to the nearest base as we were slightly lost. On one occasion, we picked a secluded farm house in the Barrington Tops area. As we descended and started to do low circuits of the house, we noticed a bloke working on a Land Rover. As we turned near him, the bonnet collapsed onto his head, while his frisky dog chased around the house several times. We eventually put down in the rear yard of his house yard, with a little dust flying, chooks flapping , barking dog, etc. As the rotor wash was subsiding, this huge woman came flying out the house back door as if she was taking serious offence to our presence. We were stunned because she was so big we couldnt figure out how she used the door at all. It was a sort of earth trembling moment as she looked like she meant business. Well out I hopped, and by this time the bloke with the sore head had arrived. I held the most serious face I could muster and asked Excuse me Mam, Sir, which direction do the planes fly in when they are going to Sydney? Well they both stood back and after some discussion pointed to this gap in the hills. Well that was that, back to the aircraft and as we got airborne, the boss says we better fly through the right gap here, we dont want her chasing us.......... Another delightful but true tale of the chopper world. Wonder what they told their grandkids....
