Being Educated in Safety Awareness is for Everyone! Daily Safety Topics Week of January 26, 2015 ________________________________________ Monday, January 26 Preventing Back Pain Chronic back pain affects 8 out of 10 people, and practicing back safety at work prevents the problem from becoming worse. Planning ahead, getting help, and working smart can prevent back injuries from occurring on the job. When you are lifting or moving objects, keep them as close to your body as possible, creating a low center of gravity. Do not twist your extremities when you lift or put down materials, turn your entire body at once. Improve back safety at work by lifting materials smoothly and using your legs rather than back muscles for strength. Tuesday, January 27 Violence in the Workplace Violence in the workplace can be a serious safety and health issue. If an issue escalates between you and a co-worker, please make sure you bring it to your supervisor’s attention. No argument is worth getting hurt over. Wednesday, January 28 Occupational Noise Even though hearing loss is one of the most common occupational illnesses, it is often ignored because there are no visible effects. It develops over a period of time, and with the exception of rare cases, there is no pain. Persons experience a progressive loss of communication, socialization, and response to their environment. Please remember it is an expectation that you wear your hearing protection in posted areas. Do it for your hearing’s sake. Thursday, January 29 Why is Workplace Safety Important? Have you ever asked the question, why is workplace safety important? Many people do not realize the high number of work related accidents and injuries that occur each year. Sadly, many of the accidents result in fatal injuries. According to OSHA statistics, each year approximately 5,800 workers are killed in work related accidents. In addition, about 4 out of every 100 workers are injured on the job. Many of these injuries and/or deaths may have been prevented if the workers had been given better safety training or had taken appropriate precautions. Taking shortcuts and putting yourself at risk, is not worth the potential injury that may result. Friday, January 30 What to do when you Find a Safety Hazard 1. Make sure others are aware of the hazard so they don’t get hurt. 2. Notify your supervisor. 3. Follow-up to make sure the hazard was addressed. Nobody Gets Hurt!!!
