Being Irish, born and bred, I am very conscious of the reputation - TopicsExpress

Being Irish, born and bred, I am very conscious of the reputation of the Irish and St. Paddys Day. Sadly, for many, Paddys Day is an excuse to over-indulge, and is the cause of a lot of distress to families, all in the name of being Irish. No! I am not proud to be associated with that. I remember back to when I was 21; I arrived in New York the day before Paddys Day. I was shocked and embarrassed by the way everyone seemed to be gearing up for a major Piss-up!, and there was plenty of good evidence that they were getting in the mood already. I suddenly felt ashamed of my Irish heritage, and how it was perceived. I decided there and then that I did not want to be part of that, so I went to a travel agent and got the earliest flight I could get on the morning of Paddys Day and flew to Montreal for 2 weeks. I am partial to a jar or two. I just dont like getting drunk, so I pay attention. I find it disappointing when the company I keep disappears into the fog and becomes another, unrecognizable persona. I am also aware of my desire and responsibility not to interfere with, or compromise the safety of other citizens as they negotiate the highways on their way home. I wish everyone a happy St. Patricks Day, and a safe and pleasurable one. Let our behavior also be a cause for celebration and joy.
