Being The Devils Advocate: Question: Hapkido practitioners promotes the illusion their art is strictly for self defense because of its deadly skills. Are the skills of the skills of Hapkido relevant in real fight or at least in a unrehearsed sparring match? Hapkido as currently practiced is theoretical. Attack and defense is prearranged and contrived. Your partner seizes your wrist and goes along with your execution without offering any resistance. It all works out beautifully... All involved live with the illusion that this is how a real fight goes. That is, until someone is committed to injuring you. If youve been in a real fight or a good sparring match, you would quickly learn that its not easy or damn near impossible to grab someones wrist and execute a wrist turn out or a arm-bar. A real fight has certain demands. Hapkido skills should evolve to meet these demands. Chief amongst these demands is cardiovascular fitness. Thoughts?
