Being a coach is really fascinating. You get to hear what really drives people, and moreover, you get to notice how pervasive the same few dysfunctions are. Three times in two days, Ive had this discussion with people: Client: I cant possibly do X. I dont know how. (Where X is a job title.) Me: Did you know how to do your current job when you started? Client: No. Me: Did you take classes to master your current job? Client: No. Me: Did your company give you training in your current job? Client: No. Me: So ... you walked into a situation with no experience and managed to find a way to succeed and become one of the highest performers at the company? Client: Yes. Me: So why do you think that you need any more preparation for X? Whats so interesting is that when people know they dont know (e.g. early 20s), they just shrug and go for it, knowing theyre equally unqualified for anything. Then they succeed at something [or at least just gain experience at something], and by the time theyre in their 30s, they fall into the trap of believing they have to be good at something before they can take it on. And by people and clients, of course, I mean, me, too.
