Being a journalist in a small town is much more than covering the story. Yesterday as I spent the day traveling around our community covering relief efforts, recovery and planning, I spoke to many friends and made some new ones. At one business, I hugged a friend as she cried on my shoulder. At another, I helped load filing cabinets into a truck as volunteers raced to beat todays rains. I saw the booth I usually sit in to grab a burger at a restaurant with no walls. I passed by the donut shop that was destroyed. Its a place where on a normal Saturday we grab our donuts and chocolate milk. Across the road, at a restaurant where we are part of the family when we eat, I saw devastation. I spoke to exhausted police officers and volunteers. Last night, I escorted my wife to a funeral visitation to say goodbye to a friend of hers who died in Tuesdays tornado. Ive covered disasters before, but I dont know that any has ever impacted me this much. Continue to pray and send good vibes to Columbia, Mississippi. #columbiastrong
