Being a parent to parents can suck. Last night I told Dad that I - TopicsExpress

Being a parent to parents can suck. Last night I told Dad that I had changed the locks because I couldnt remember who had keys and it was just time to change them. I had six keys on the washing machine and he glanced over at them. He paused for a second and said, I wont even ask you for a key.. Yeah, that broke my heart. It was sort of like he understood why I really changed the deadbolts to dual lock. So, about 10:00 PM I went downstairs and locked all the doors from the inside and about 11:00 PM the light on the stairway began flashing (his sign for I need something and I know you dont want me to climb the stairs). I was almost asleep but not quite. I ran downstairs and he said he needed to get in the garage to get Mom a ginger ale. I unlocked the door, went to the garage fridge and fetched the soft drink. This morning I unlocked the side door, brought in the newspaper (thanks Richard) and then locked the door back. I heard Dad stirring about 10 and went back downstairs to make coffee but Mom wasnt up. I went in to check on her and she wasnt feeling well. Said she had a cold. I gave her the morning meds and brought her a cup of coffee and a soft drink. I poured Dads coffee and he got his cereal. He looked pretty pitiful sitting there eating breakfast alone. About half an hour later I checked on Mom again - she said she was feeling better but not ready to get up - and there was Dad curled up beside her sound asleep. He cant bear not being in the same room with her. I was supposed to meet Sharon for lunch today but when I talked to her this morning she could tell things werent quite right. She agreed I needed to hang close by. Being the wonderful angel that she is, and knowing me as well as she does, she knew I was feeling sad and my amazing friend brought lunch over and we sat on the patio in the sunshine and what a fine friend she is to read between the lines like she does. Thank you Sharon - you go way beyond the call of what a sister and best friend does and I am so incredibly blessed to have you in my life. Moms up and around a little but I met her in the hall a few minutes ago and I asked her how she was doing? Well, Barbe says the company that runs this place isnt serving dinner today. Do you know anything about that? Is it a holiday? I told her that I was the lady who ran this place and that she would have dinner tonight. She looked at me curiously and said, Well, Ill tell Barbe - he didnt know how we would get dinner.. I heard her walk into their room and mom said, Whats her name said shes doing dinner tonight.. I had to smile. You have to smile. You just gotta smile.
