Being an educator/teacher is a privilege that must not be taken - TopicsExpress

Being an educator/teacher is a privilege that must not be taken lightly. As academics we take ourselves so seriously, boast about our multiple achievements, produce lengthy CVs to impress the world, but honestly at the end of the day this profession is about reaching out to people, sharing knowledge, helping our students, building bridges and making our own quiet little effort to give back something to the world. Our grants, publications in the worlds best journals, books, multiple citations, the positions, the chairs we hold, the keynotes we are invited to deliver, the awards, recognition we gloat over...all that is useless/irrelevant if we cannot reach out to another, if we have no love and respect for human beings, if we fail to reach out to, even acknowledge those on the tragedy of whose lives, we build our careers! Being a good academic is easy, being a good human being with a heart is just not aspirational, or cool!?
