Once, when I so admired one of my sisters, I was admiring of her ealy interest in writing on Euthanasia while an exchange student in Iowa, at such a tender age as her teens. Now that the debate is raging again due to the recent death of 29 year-old Brittany Maynard, I insist on this point: a person should be afforded the right to die with dignity, when and how he or she chooses. Florida being this stone-aged Republican fossilized state which only sees up to its own umbilical narrow-minded world, such a bill had not a chance. Hypocritical doctors, mostly Republicans, of course, can only interpret things too literally. I would expand the topic to include mental illnesses as well. Like so many incurable and debilitating cancers, some types of mental illnesses are just as debilitating, unknown, marginalized, ignored by a restrictive system that renders the individual straight-jacketed into a life that he or she may never have chosen to LIVE. I have written Advance Directives years ago, together with a Pre-nup and a Testament. To make it clearer, I am DNR, organ donor, my doctor Abbey Strauss and Neri Franzon know and, I hope, will honor my wishes NEVER to be hospitalized in the USA, where there is NO health system. I have SUS in Brazil. If not possible to fly back to Brazil, then let me DIE at home or on the streets! One cannot possibly make it in America, achieve the American Dream, only to lose it all to ridiculous medical bills which are so indecent to expand upon any further. In the U.S. a persons medical care will vary according to medical insurance coverage, and I abhor this system as is. Ready For Hillary had the courage to DO WHAT IS RIGHT AND DECENT: universal health care. Republicans and Plutocrats crumbled her plans dead in the water. A life is worth living when there is HOPE for improving the WORLD, BEYOND BORDERS, BEYOND ONES OWN SELF. FREEDOM should include such a fundamental human right too.
