Being insanely busy at work has helped me ignore the fact that its Christmas time. But when I have a morning like today with some downtime, the emotional void rises to the surface and I realise Im pretty down about it. I have made a conscious effort this year to try to embrace the Aussie way of doing Christmas, but as much as I try, it still just doesnt feel right. Today is the first day I have heard a Christmas song and it hit me hard. As much as the warm weather, beaches and Palm trees are absolutely beautiful, and the cultural difference is interesting and educational, it still just doesnt give the unique feeling that a Canadian christmas gives. Theres something to be said about the glow that a street full of lit up houses gives to freshly fallen snow. The crunch under your feet, the smell of Christmas spices and home cooked dinners. The music, the drinks, the egg nog, the cozy warmth of dozing off next to the fireplace and the tree after a few bourbons. Theres no replacing it. I will try my best to really embrace Christmas here, but there will always be a place in my heart for the feeling of a white, Canadian Christmas. Emotional outpouring complete.
