Being introduced to and practicing mindfulness has altered so many aspects of my life. Nope, its not a cult (it has roots in Buddhism), just a way to live life in the moment, not dwelling on the past or the worrying about the future. Having the support to practice Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has been critical. Practicing mindfulness meditation, present moment awareness, techniques to improve self compassion, mindful eating, and a focus on self care has improved the way I live. Realizing that I dont need to seek perfection (which isnt possible) and accepting my thoughts and feelings in a non-judgmental way has decreased my level of stress and increased my self-esteem. It starts with identifying your values. When you find a good therapist to guide you, theyll help you move in the direction of your values, working as a kind of life coach, as well. If youre interested, theres tons of information about mindfulness and ACT all over the web. This video does a great job of explaining a key concept of ACT.
