Being singled out by God is an enormous privilege, but it also comes with heavy responsibilities. But at first, Joseph, favored of God and Jacob, uses his gifts only for his own glory. But Joseph undergoes a profound transformation. Over time—perhaps because of his great suffering—he grows to the point of understanding that divine election is not an invitation to egotism and self-adoration: it is a call to service.
