Being the new person on a school board is an humbling experience. - TopicsExpress

Being the new person on a school board is an humbling experience. This is something I experienced in 1976 and 2002. At FSSD, I was one of six members and on the WCS board I was one of twelve. I have also experienced losing, once by an outraged public in 1992 and once by partisan targeting in 2010. That also is an humbling experience. In each case the school districts were excellent before I was elected and continued to improve after I left. In the two months since the election of six new members we have had some initial conflict and some examples of teamwork and professional cooperation. We have a few pending items of contention and distrust but we have made some progress. Now we just have to convince the central office, parents, teachers, students, former board members, experienced board members, and new board members that we have a shared vision for the future of the school district. Radical ideas, individual hubris, and anger can be tamed at the table of reason.
