Being unjust to your work is the worst form of disservice one can do towards society. I had admitted my own practices that may not be absolutely honest but I shall explain oe by one in my subsequent posts why I am a silent party to all that. People generally feel honesty means just not taking bribes. I feel it also means being unjust to the job you have been assigned. I can remember a few examples where no bribes were taken but the concerned person did maximum disservice to his job, his society and the nation 1. Bhishma and Dronacharya not stopping Dushashan from undressing Draupadi. This was the reason they both are remembered alongside Duryodhana despite being people of exceptional competence and impeccable integrity. 2. Manmohan Singh not even threatening any action when A Raja, Suresh Kalmadi, Navin Jindal and others were openly robbing the nation. The only time he risked his chair was for nuclear deal with US and we know it now that national interests were not adequately taken care of in it. He might claim to be honest but he is worse than his corrupt predecessors. 3. A K Antony making the Indian armed forces much weaker than what they were a decade back. He has blacklisted most of the weapon suppliers of the world. Add the lack of indigenous capability to it and the picture becomes terrifying. Arvind Kejriwal makes a political party in the name of fighting corruption, becomes Delhi Chief Minister, makes announcements that he knows will not be implemented, shields his lawbreaker minister, resigns without any concrete action (barring hollow announcements) and then drops the corruption issue altogether 5. Atal Behari Vajpayee not allowing the army to cross LOC at the time of Kargil war. This led to loss of precious lives, and worse, almost established LOC as the International border. When the territory on that side of LOC is ours, there was no reason to stop on this side. If there was fear of international pressure, see what China is doing, they are claiming everything that they feel was theirs even five thousand years back.Again personal image given more importance than national interests. However, his lifting of ban on Bofors in that critical time was really commendable. If we see all these examples, the issue of corruption and honesty becomes more complicated than it seems. In my subsequent posts, I shall try to share my viewpoint on how I have tried to be just towards my work, even if it meant being party to some not so clean things around. I know my friends will pick examples from the above according to their political inclination but the aim is not to accuse anyone, we have plenty of politicians around doing that.
