Being with the dying and bereaved is the most humbling experience - TopicsExpress

Being with the dying and bereaved is the most humbling experience I know. There are no easy answers to offer someone who faces the greatest of fears and the most agonising of losses. Writing this book has been a profound challenge because, before the enormity of death and grief, words are not sufficient. Yet in a book words are all we have, so we must use words to reach beyond words and awaken something deeper: genuine love and authentic wisdom. The philosophical insights, practical guided meditations, and personal anecdotes that make up this little book draw on my experience as a bereavement counsellor, and as a facilitator of residential retreats on spirituality and death. This work gave me the privilege of sharing with complete strangers moments of intimate vulnerability, naked reality, bittersweet poignancy, deep connection, overwhelming compassion and transcendent wonder. It showed me beyond doubt that it is often during the times of our greatest confusion and suffering that we have the greatest opportunity to grow. It convinced me that death is a powerful teacher that, through pain and suffering, challenges us to discover who we really are, shows us what really matters, and leads us to a deep love that embraces both joy and sorrow.
