Bekah and I have been discussing this lately and it has been a frequent thought on my mind. So here are my thoughts. The marketing industry has outsmarted us all and taken appealing words to try to trick us into believing what we are buying is healthy or valuable. Let me break it down for you: Local: youre supporting the local economy, not necessarily healthy or ethically raised/grown food Organic: chemicals are still used, theyre just USDA Organic approved Farm Raised: Yeah, thats vague Cage free: They arent in a cage but still likely inside never eating anything wild or seeing the sun. Free Range: Again, still confined to some space that they can range freely in, likely a small space or devoid of other life. All Natural: Cyanide is all natural. So is poison ivy and the flu virus. Hormone Free: Most farmers were never pumping hormones into their chickens, but as soon as people thought that farmers were, marketers rolled with Hormone Free Vegetarian Fed: Chickens are omnivores, they eat meat and bugs and seeds and plants. They need protien. Antibiotic Free: Similar to hormones, very seldom used and only on sick animals. Would you rather eat the sick animal or them kill it and it be wasted? Grass Fed: What kind of fertilizers did they use to grow that there grass? Sugar Free: So they add artificial sweeteners. Raw cane sugar is going to do less harm to you than an artificial sweetener. And as for non sugar sweeteners, unless youre using a stevia leaf, the processing it goes through the reach powder form greatly distorts its chemical properties and thus making it nearly artificial. I work with a research developer for Truvia. What does she use? Sugar. Trust me, I know that this is not always true in marketing, nor are all these things necessarily bad. But we have got to see through the marketing schemes and really ask what these sparkly words mean and what in the world we are eating. Do your homework, educate yourself.
