Belief cannot create truth, truth is already the case. There is no need to believe in it or not. Belief means to believe in something as true. It is just pretending to know ther Truth. Truth can only be discovered, experienced. Even when you believe in truth it is no longer a truth to you. Belief is cheap, it arises with a question of disbelief. To discover truth is arduous, it is a long pilgrimage. It needs a great emptying of the mind. And it is risky, it may not console you, it has no obligation to console you. It may shatter all that you have known before. It is dangerous, it may destroy all your dreams, it is like going through fire, it is going to kill you as you are in the form right now. A seed never knows that by dying in the soil it will become a great tree. It will not be there to witness the happening. To become a tree you have to die, you have to disappear like the seed does. Very few have that courage. It needs guts to discover truth. You will die as yourself. You will be reborn, but there is no guarantee. Belief can not give you the truth, it only pretends. The inquiry into truth begins only when you drop all believing. The danger in belief is that it makes you feel that you know the truth, this becomes the greatest barrier in the search for truth. Catholic believe in God, the Communist believe in no-God- both are believers. Believe or disbelieve its the same thing- because disbelief is nothing but belief in a negative form. The believer believes it is so, the nonbeliever believes it is not so. And because both have already settled, they will never search for the Truth. Muslims believe in Islam, Hindus believe in Hinduism, Christians believe in Christianity. Rather believing in Christ or Buddha, rather being Christian or Buddhist, we should try to be Buddha or Christ ourselves, we should try to encounter the truth ourselves. The society likes us to believe, because believers are obedient, law-abiding. They follow the formalities and etiquette, they are not trouble-makers, they dont protest, they dont raise their voice, they can be made to follow the crowd easily. Growth is nothing but enquiry into truth. Believers never grow, they remain childish. And to be childish and to be childlike are differernt things. It is beautiful to be childlike. The man of trust is childlike, the man of belief is childish. To be childlike is the ultimate growth, the culmination. To be childish means to be ungrownup. Believers never grow, they remain childish. A real man never believes, he learns. A real man never becomes knowledgeable, he always reamain open, open to truth. Even while dying he will be learning, he will be enquiring- enquiring into death. He wil be fascinated, death is such an unknown phenomenon, such mystery, he will not be afraid.
