Believe it or not, I have a good grasp on nutrition and the concept of weight control. I just didnt have the desire to put that knowledge to work until recently. I mention this because I get questions from some of my students about some of the things they should be eating. Theyll text me a picture of a food package and ask, is this good? The answer is complicated and depends on what you are doing. You need to think of food and drink as fuel for your human engine. If youve been running it hard all day you need more energy to replace what youve spent. If youve been sitting around all day, you should consider lower calorie substitutes. Lance Armstrong and Michael Phelps will do 24,000 calories a day when they are training because they burn that and more. For most of us, 1/8 to 1/12 of that will be more than sufficient. This is why athletes get fat after their competitive career is over. I gained 110 pounds in the 15 years since I stopped competing because I continued to fill the tank as if I were still running the vehicle like a race car. At some point, the tank had to get bigger.
