Believe it or not the idea of building local anti water tax - TopicsExpress

Believe it or not the idea of building local anti water tax campaigns on the principle of non payment of the charge alongside the other protest tactics is still a matter of controversy. At last weeks national steering meeting of the Right2Water coalition I (representing the Anti Austerity Alliance) raised with the union reps and reps of other parties that they might review their policy of not explicitly advocating non-payment in light of the massive demo on 11th October and the subsequent encouraging figures for non registration. I was in a minority in the debate. One point that was made was that Right2Water coming out fully for non payment would deter those who havent yet decided not to pay from participating. I dont accept that. Yesterdays massive protest in Limerick was a non payment protest. My sense is that on the ground advocating non payment is a given amongst campaigners. In some areas like Dublin 15 Sinn Fein using the banner of Right2Water to attack the AAA for building the campaign like in limerick under the banner of We Wont Pay trying to bring us down to their lowest common denominator position of not organising the boycott and instead turning non payment into a pure individual gesture. Bad underestimation of the potential in the situation in my opinion. Im happy that advocating non payment seems to be the consensus among most of the forces active in north east Dublin socialistparty.ie/2014/10/10000-march-in-limerick-with-message-no-way-we-wont-pay/
