Believe that the universe is pretty self-sustaining and that you and yours matter...its good for you. Being an optimist means, to me, believing that in the grand scheme of things, the world works. We cant trust TOO much, but we can trust enough---and we can be smart enough to surround ourselves with reliable people, so we can help the ones who need just a bit more help. We can leave our patch of Mother Earth at least no worse than we found it, and better if at all possible. The species is improving. On the whole were no longer desirous of war, no longer viewing our neighbors land as an opportunity, and were more empathetic than our ancestors. Thats an overall gain. Being empathetic has a cost---meaning we get distressed by others actions. But along with it we develop wisdom. And alternate answers. So we live at a very good time on this planet---but not as good as it will be, if the trend of the last 5000 years continues. We live in a time when the barbarians arent the rule, but the exception. Doesnt mean we can let our guard down, but it does mean we can choose which to be...a builder or a breaker. sciencedaily/release s/2015/01/150109123502.htm
